Welcome to the Grange-over-Sands and District Concert Club

Message from the President, Dr. Sheila Phizacklea

Every one of the concerts in our 44th season was outstanding, from the young up-and-coming major prize-winning ensembles to the internationally acclaimed "heavyweights".

So to make our 45th season even more special we have introduced a few changes. There will be seven concerts instead of the usual six.

The extra concert in March brings the very popular Ulverston Victoria High School Swing Band who have kindly agreed to perform a varied programme in aid of our irreplaceable venue and home to our venerable Steinway piano, the Victoria Hall, which is currently facing funding cuts. All proceeds from this fundraising concert will go to the hall, so please come with your friends, family and neighbours to support our local asset as well as the talented pupils of one of the local secondary schools. As this is a fundraising concert it will not be included in the 2018 season ticket.

As we celebrate such talented young musicians and look at the demographics of our audiences, it is quite clear that the two simply don't match. For a number of years we have offered free admission to young people, but as the take-up has been small we have decided that something else must be done.

In addition to the usual evening concert, The Rautio Trio of piano, violin and cello will give an afternoon performance on Friday 6 July especially for groups of local primary school children.  They will be introduced to the different instruments and the types of music they can make. If successful we will make this an annual event funded entirely by the concert club and not from the schools' budgets. With luck we can encourage our audiences of the future.

Contemporary music on programmes is usually met with groans, especially from our committee members! Yet we are missing some opportunities to chime with modern life.

Famed pianist, Sam Haywood is also a composer. For his concert on 1 June he has written a piece "Nocturne", which will receive its world première in Grange-over-Sands. We feel particularly honoured, especilly as his last new work "The Other Side" was premièred in Vienna. Its next performance, at the Cadogan Hall in London, caused quite an excited stir.

We feel we have put together an interesting and varied programme for 2018 and we hope you will enjoy some top-class performances right here on our doorstep.

Members can also enjoy 10% discount off pre concert dinners at "Thyme Out" contemporary coffee house and restaurant next to the hall. Booking essential(015395 34079) and be prepared to show your season ticket.
