Welcome to the Grange-over-Sands and District Concert Club
The Grange and District Concert Club enjoyed a successful 43nd season in 2016 with an 11% increase in attendance.
It began unusually early in March when local 2014 BBC Young Musicians of the Year Competition semi-finalist Jess Gillam (saxophone) and finalist Elliott Gaston-Ross (percussion) gave a sparkling performance which, among other instruments, involved a wheelbarrow. Jess had already won the woodwind category final and the semi-final of the 2016 Competition, and we were all very excited to cheer her when she appeared in the televised concerto final in May. An aftercare scheme for finalists such as Jess is provided by the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT), who also audition 130 artists each year to select three or four whose careers they guide and manage. This year's overall winner was the Castalian String Quartet who appear in Grange in early June. Winners from previous years are Michael Petrov (cello) and Alexander Ullman (piano) who appear in August. The season begins in April with more young artists, the Pelléas Ensemble (viola, harp, and flute) who are 2016 winners of the St Martin in the Fields Music Competition. They are followed in May by post graduate students from the Royal Northern College of Music who treat us to operatic arias.
Established talent is represented by local pianist Martin Roscoe who makes a welcome return at the end of June, and the season closes in September with a concert given by Matthew Trusler (violin) and Ashley Wass (piano) as part of their 40th anniversary tour. They have each notched up 20 years of playing to audiences all over the country, and have chosen some of the pieces they have most enjoyed performing. In a new venture for us, the concert will be preceded by an entertaining and informative talk.
Members can also enjoy 10% discount off pre concert dinners at "Thyme Out" contemporary coffee house and restaurant next to the hall. Booking essential(015395 34079) and be prepared to show your season ticket.
